Allah Rakkah Rahman - Elevating India to Oscars

A R Rahman proved once again why he is a composer who stands apart in the crowd. He was awarded two Oscar awards, for Best Original Score and Best Song in the movie. It was the song ‘Jai Ho’ which won the much acclaimed award and Rahman provided a glimpse of his brilliance as he performed it live at the Oscars. The other award which he received was for original score in the movie.

Rahman was in a dark black sherwani and said in his usual humble manner that the reason for his being there was him choosing love between love and hate in life! The entire team of Slumdog Millionaire was ecstatic after grabbing 8 Oscar awards thereby making it appear like a one sided affair!

AR Rahman with these awards has proved that he is musician and composer with that extra fizz that makes him a lone crusader in his league. For all of you who wish to have a look at his genius in this movie, you could enjoy the feet thumping music by watching the following videos of O Saya, Jai Ho, Ringa Ringa and more!

An unforgettable 2008

Only 10 days are left for the Oscars to get underway and the whole nation is waiting with bated breath for the Mozart of Madras to claim the coveted title.

The question that is doing the rounds right now is whether 'Slumdog Millionaire' (SDM), the rags-to-riches story will make India rich (with awards).

Talking about Rahman, it could not have been a better 2008 for him. He stormed the film music world last year by coming up with one hit after another.

Rahman began the year with 'Jodhaa Akbar' and followed it up with 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na' and capped it all with the score of British director Danny Boyle's film 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Ghajini'.

Jodhaa Akbar's music was quite enjoyable though the film bombed. The epic film had tracks like 'Azeem-O-Shaan' 'Shahenshah', 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' and 'Jashn-E-Bahaara' that went down well with the listeners.

The youthful music of 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na' struck the right chord with youngsters. The music of the much-hyped Aamir Khan starrer 'Ghajini' was another feather in Rahman's cap.

In Tamil, Rahman's 'Taxi Taxi' in the film Sakkarakatti emerged as an anthem among the youth. Though the movie did not do well at the box office, his songs reached the masses. This year has begun on a grand scale for Rahman for he is working in Mani Ratnam and Shankar's films. Moreover his songs in the yet-to-be-released Delhi 6 are making waves. (The songs are already topping the charts).

With Slumdog taking him places, Rahman has proved that he is indeed a rare genius. Rahman's birthday is on January 6. It could be coincidental, but then he has been showered by awards as soon as he celebrated his birthday this year.

Let's hope the run continues with the Oscars as well.

World's Priciest Cities To Own A Home

Those living in Monte Carlo may enjoy the Côte d’Azur's beaches, glamorous nightlife and status as a tax haven, but they pay for it.

For the second consecutive year, the resort area tops a list of the world's most expensive housing markets, boasting average prices of $4,420 per square foot.

"Monte Carlo is a city of the rich, small and concentrated," says Matthew Montagu-Pollock, publisher of Globalpropertyguide.com, the online real estate research firm that released the report Monday. "The primary reasons for such high prices are related to a shortage of space and tax havens."

Moscow ($1,937 per square foot) and London ($1,928 per square foot) ranked second and third. Moscow's one-spot jump to the top three was propelled by strong economic growth, partly a result of recent high oil prices, and a rise in residential real estate prices in the first three quarters of the year. Last year, the country experienced gross domestic product growth of 6%, according to the CIA's World Factbook.

A surprising turn was New York's drop to No. 6, from No. 2, as growth in Asian markets pushed Hong Kong and Tokyo to the top five. Residential apartment prices in Hong Kong and Tokyo were as high as $1,373 and $1,103 per square foot, respectively, in last year's survey. In New York, the average price per square foot was $1,384.1.

Mumbai, India, rounds out the top 10, with prices averaging $851 per square feet.

Such high property values are surprising during this global economic crisis, but they are a sign of historically high real wealth and global growth.

"Even in these trying economic times, there is still tremendous wealth out there," says Nikki Field, senior vice president of Sotheby's International in New York. What drove down New York's rank was, in part, a "hesitancy for conspicuous consumption. The need and ability still exists to buy at the upper tier, but people are scared to publicly spend."

This pullback in spending, coupled with historically high property values, is expected to cause further correction.

"Across the board, we still see property values are too high in terms of gross rental yields," says Montagu-Pollock. "Markets got ahead of themselves and eventually will collapse."

The report appears to support this notion. Gross rental yields, the ratio of yearly rents to purchase price and a measure of value used in the U.K., are between 4% and 5% in major cities such as Brussels, Belgium; Tokyo; Moscow; New York; and London. The lower the gross rental yield, the more overvalued the property. This is compared with an historical average of 5.5% to 8%, which Montagu-Pollock deemed "more reasonable."

Only six cities currently have rental yields of more than 10%. Topping the list is Chisinau, Moldova, with a 14.17% gross rental yield, and Cairo, Egypt, the least expensive property market, with an average price per square feet of $574 and gross rental yield of 12%.

This suggests that it will take much more time to close the gap and return to normal averages.

"We're in a correcting market, and we're still moving down," says Field. "While transfers are at a 15-year low, we're still seeing values in New York and other major international cities steady, because we have a lot of situational sellers in the upper tier who don't need to sell and are therefore not negotiating prices."

Bottom line: It will take far more economic pain to bring these boom cities, the beneficiaries of tremendous economic growth, back to real estate reality.

The Pathans burn it up!!!

India needed 57 runs from 29 deliveries when Irfan Pathan joined his brother Yusuf in the middle. Yusuf, the big hitter who bowls a bit of useful offspin, is not yet a permanent fixture in India's one-day side. Plenty has been said about Irfan - critics cite his ineffective bowling on subcontinent pitches - and it appears he is struggling to identify his predominant vocation.

What followed was stirring stuff. Irfan and Yusuf plundered 59 runs off 25 balls and India posted a rousing three-wicket win with four balls to spare.

Throughout this tour, Muttiah Muralitharan has been taunting Yusuf on and off the field. "Why don't you hit me?" has often been the central jibe. Yusuf reminded him about the IPL final, when he took on Murali but was told that the pitch didn't turn. Tonight, there was no Murali and more importantly, the team situation demanded Yusuf to hit out. And he did.

"The ball had suddenly started to turn and rotating the strike was difficult," Mahendra Singh Dhoni said about the pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium. Yusuf got a little help from Tillakaratne Dilshan who threw the ball to legspinner Malinga Bandara. Cue two sixes and a four in the 16th over, and equation had quickly changed to 40 from 24 balls.

When quizzed about those monster hits at the post-match ceremony, Yusuf said they had all been in his slot. It was as if he had no excuse. He just had to hit the cover off the ball, with no offence to Bandara. As Dhoni said, Yusuf has licence to hit: "We really don't want him to rotate the strike; we want him to look for the big shots."

It wasn't all just brute force, however. Yusuf showed that behind that expressionless exterior, there was a smart brain clicking. After that expensive over from Bandara, Dilshan didn't turn back to spin, and Yusuf coolly picked singles to hand the strike over to his younger brother. Responding to the pressure admirably, Irfan unfurled some gems of his own against Dilhara Fernando and Lasith Malinga. Irfan is a better player of seam bowling and Yusuf can murder spin. It was a perfect tango.

Return of L.Balaji

L Balaji has earned a recall to the Indian team, and will replace Munaf Patel, who sustained a groin injury and was forced to return home from Sri Lanka.

Balaji last played for India in an ODI in 2005 in Sri Lanka before a stress fracture forced him out of the game. He returned to first-class cricket this season after a back surgery and a remodelled action. He was instrumental in taking Tamil Nadu into the semi-finals with 36 wickets at 17.50 from seven games. His comeback to cricket started in the first season of the IPL, where his 11 wickets in nine games for Chennai Super Kings included a hat-trick.

Munaf, who will head to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for rehabilitation, had an MRI scan on Sunday, which revealed the injury. "He won't be fit anyway till Feb 8 so we are not taking any chances and are sending him back," Prakash Dixit, the Indian team manager. said.

The injury, Dixit said, was noticed after the first ODI in Dambulla, where Munaf batted five wicketless overs for 32 runs. "Dhoni said on Sunday that Munaf had slipped and fallen during warm-up of the first game. The injury must have started then," Dixit said. He did not play the second match in Colombo.
